Seeing the Value in STEM

The Girl Scouts of America recently announced they were introducing 23 new STEM badges to encourage girls in the fields of science and technology.

This is a real acknowledgement of the importance of STEM education in children's lives, particularly girls. With the future pointing towards careers that will focus strongly in the fields of maths, science, engineering and technology it is important to provide skills in these areas early on.

Unfortunately women are underrepresented in the science and engineering workplace, especially in computer science. Women make up half the world's population and their contribution to these fields is well behind their male counterparts. Women need to be encouraged and valued in these areas to add value to the progression of these industries.

Check out this video on what the Scouts are doing in Washington, it is truely inspiring!
